Winter clothes list – what to wear in Finland in winter

  1. Insulated Jacket: A high-quality, insulated jacket is essential to keep you warm in the chilly Lapland temperatures.
  2. Warm under clothes – layered clothing: Pack thermal base layers, jumpers, and fleece-lined pants to wear under your jacket for added warmth. We would recommend Merino Wool such as these!
  3. Waterproof Outerwear: Snow pants and a waterproof jacket will keep you dry in the snow. We also took waterproof over-pants which were great. They are also lightweight and easy to pack and a great back-up if our snow-pants were still drying or in the wash!
  4. Warm Accessories: Don’t forget hats, gloves, scarves, neck warmers and thermal socks to protect your extremities from the cold.
  5. Winter Boots: Invest in insulated, waterproof boots with good traction to navigate the snowy terrain.

Additional Gear

  1. Camera: Capture the beauty of Lapland with a camera to document your adventures. Don’t forget to take spare batteries for your camera and additional memory cards so that you don’t miss out on capturing your magical moments!
  2. Tripods: for DSLR cameras and phones.
  3. Binoculars: For spotting wildlife and taking in the scenic views – this set of night binoculars could be handy with the long dark hours.
  4. Daypack: A small waterproof backpack to carry essentials during your outings.
  5. Hand Warmers: Disposable hand warmers, toe warmers and body warmers can be a lifesaver in extreme cold.

Health and Safety

  1. Medications: Bring any necessary medications and a first aid kit for emergencies.
  2. Sunscreen: Even in winter, the sun’s reflection off the snow can cause sunburn, so pack a high SPF sunscreen.
  3. Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright winter sun and glare off the snow.

Other bits and bobs

  1. Travel Adapter: Lapland uses European-style plugs, so ensure you have the right adapter for your electronics – I would recommend a universal travel adapter.
  2. Portable Charger: Keep your devices charged with a power bank, especially in cold weather, which can drain batteries faster.
  3. Swimwear: Some accommodations offer saunas and spas (hot tubs), so pack swimwear for a relaxing soak.

Packing for a trip to Lapland in winter requires thoughtful planning to ensure you’re prepared for the Arctic conditions. With the right clothing, gear, and essentials, you can fully enjoy the beauty and magic of this winter wonderland. So, bundle up, pack smart, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Lapland, Finland.
