What Is Bleisure? A Life Where Work and Travel Finally Fit

What Is Bleisure? A Life Where Work and Travel Finally Fit

Nobody tells you that choosing yourself can be this simple

I recently sat down with Emma Lovell – India travel specialist, Bleisure Coach and author of The Art of Bleisure – for a conversation that started about India and ended up being about something much bigger – permission.

Permission to travel without waiting for the “right time.” Permission to build a life where work, family and adventure aren’t fighting each other for space. Permission, really, to choose yourself.

That’s what Bleisure is.

So, what actually is Bleisure?

Emma coined the term to describe a life where business, travel and personal fulfilment aren’t separate boxes you tick off in order – they flow together. It’s not about being an “influencer with no responsibilities,” as Emma puts it. She has a business, a husband, a son. Bleisure isn’t the absence of responsibility; it’s refusing to let responsibility be the reason you never go.

It became the title of her book, The Art of Bleisure, because after 17 years in business – and the last three built specifically around this philosophy – Emma kept coming back to the same idea – you don’t need a different life to start living the one you want. You need to stop treating travel, rest and joy as things you earn only after everything else is done.

It’s a mindset shift more than a lifestyle brand and it’s one I think every woman reading this will recognise the shape of, even if she’s never had a word for it.

The guilt nobody talks about

Here’s the part of our conversation that stuck with me the most. Emma and I talked about the very specific scrutiny women – especially mothers – face when they choose to travel without their families, or prioritise something just for themselves. The questions about who’s looking after the kids. The raised eyebrows. The quiet implication that wanting something for yourself is somehow selfish.

It’s an outdated script and it’s one we’re both actively trying to rewrite – Emma through Bleisure, and me through Travel Her Way.

Here’s the truth – choosing yourself isn’t a betrayal of the people you love. It’s often what makes you better for them. A woman who gives herself permission to travel, to rest, to have an adventure that’s entirely hers, comes home more herself – not less present for everyone else.

You don’t need perfect conditions

Emma’s biggest move yet is proof of this. At the end of 2026, she’s relocating her family to India for three months – her husband Matt, their five-year-old son Finn and a business that runs entirely online coming along for the ride. It’s not a spontaneous decision. India has been part of her life for more than 20 years, since she first visited at 17 and stayed somewhere that felt, in her words, like home from the very first trip.

But it’s also not happening because every condition lined up perfectly. An earlier plan to relocate somewhere else fell through and rather than shelve the dream, Emma and her family decided to prioritise it anyway. Her advice for anyone waiting for “someday”? Give yourself permission to act now. Write the goal down. Say it out loud to someone. Make it real before you feel ready – because you’ll likely never feel completely ready, and there’s no guarantee “someday” arrives at all.

That’s Bleisure in action. Not a perfectly optimised life. A decision to stop waiting.

What this looks like at Travel Her Way

This is exactly the spirit Travel Her Way was built on. Every trip we run – whether it’s a Women’s Weekender an hour from home or a small-group adventure on the other side of the world – starts from the same idea Emma lives by – you are allowed to say yes to yourself.

You don’t need a passport full of stamps or a business that runs itself to start. You need one trip, with the right women around you, to remind you what it feels like to choose adventure instead of waiting for it to be convenient.

Speaking of adventure – we’re planning our own big Bleisure moment. Travel Her Way is putting together a Women’s Adventure to India for 2028 and after this conversation with Emma, we couldn’t be more excited about it. If India has ever quietly (or loudly) sat on your bucket list, this is your sign not to wait for someday either.
