The Story Behind Santa’s Cabin
While you won’t find Santa in his workshop at this cabin, it still holds a special place in the hearts of many. The cabin gained its fame when it was featured in the Christmas Story movie, becoming a recognisable landmark for fans of the film. Situated in the heart of Levi, Finland, this quaint log cabin exudes a rustic charm. The serene setting, combined with the iconic design of the cabin, creates a peaceful atmosphere perfect for enjoying the surrounding beauty.
I was lucky enough to experience it on my own in Autumn just as the sun was setting. It was truly exquisite!

A Mountain-Top Retreat with Unbeatable Views
What makes Santa’s Cabin so unique is its location. Perched high on a mountaintop, the cabin offers a breath-taking view of Levi’s snow-covered landscapes in winter, lush green forests in summer and colours of Ruska in Autumn. The sight of the cabin against the backdrop of the Finnish wilderness is truly something to behold, making it a prime spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Getting There: A Steep But Worthwhile Journey
One thing to keep in mind when planning your visit to Santa’s Cabin is the terrain. The cabin is accessible year-round, but it’s located at the top of a steep mountain. While the journey up can be a bit challenging, the effort is definitely worth it. Whether you choose to hike up or take a cable car ride (when it is open), you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas once you reach the top.
However, descending from the mountaintop can be tricky, especially during winter when the path may be icy. The steep incline can be slippery, so is you’re visiting you should take care and wear appropriate footwear for the trek down. It’s a good idea to take your time and enjoy the scenery on the way up and down to fully appreciate the beauty of Levi. I slipped on the gravel when I was there as there are loose rocks underfoot.

What to Expect During Your Visit
Once you’ve reached the cabin, take a moment to soak in the peaceful surroundings. While it’s not a place where you can meet Santa, it’s still a fantastic spot to relax, enjoy the views and snap some photos. Many visitors find the cabin to be a quiet retreat from the busier tourist spots, allowing for a peaceful moment in the heart of nature.
The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, whether you’re into hiking, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying the serene atmosphere. Levi is known for its outdoor adventures and a visit to Santa’s Cabin is a perfect way to experience the natural beauty of Lapland.
