We spent the most wonderful Christmas in Rovaniemi Lapland. It truly was a dream come true! From snow-covered streets and forests, seeing the Northern Lights in the sky, this winter wonderland offers something special for everyone, and the best part? It’s entirely possible to plan your own DIY Rovaniemi adventure.

Why Visit Rovaniemi in Winter?
Rovaniemi is more than just a bucket-list destination; it’s an experience of a lifetime. Its pristine Arctic landscapes and endless snow activities make it perfect for adventurers, families, solo travellers and couples alike. Whether you want to meet Santa, explore Arctic history, or glide through snow-covered forests on a husky sled or reindeer sleigh ride, Rovaniemi delivers. Winter is also the best time to witness the Aurora Borealis and experience the charm of traditional Finnish Lapland culture.
DIY 5-Day Rovaniemi Itinerary
Everyone has different priorities when they travel to Lapland, they also have different budgets to work with and list of must-do activities! Regardless of how long you’re staying, be sure you have ‘down time’ to just enjoy your natural surroundings and snow play!
Santa Claus Village
No visit to Rovaniemi is complete without meeting Santa Claus himself. Santa Claus Village is pure festive magic – where Christmas lives all year round. You can send a postcard stamped with the special Arctic Circle postmark from Santa’s Post Office, shop for unique gifts in the village boutiques, and take that iconic photo with Santa and Mrs Claus. This was the perfect way to kick off our Lapland adventure and capture the spirit of Christmas.
If you’re in Rovaniemi at Christmas time, it is worth pencilling in December 23rd at SCV so that you can farewell Santa on his journey around the world!
We also thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Snowman World while we were visiting for the day. The tubing was a great highlight for all of us!
Kotatieva Winter Leisure Park
Kotatieva Winter Leisure Park is a hidden gem just a short drive from Rovaniemi, where adventure and relaxation meet. We tried ice skating, disc golf, sledding, bowling, snowshoeing, sauna and more! We had an absolute blast! Afterward, we warmed up by a roaring fire, cooked sausages and enjoyed hot drinks in hand. The family owned and family friendly location (for all ages) made it a highlight of our trip.
Husky Safari
One of the most unforgettable experiences was visiting a husky kennel and taking a sled and team of dogs through the snowy forest. As soon as we arrived, we could tell the huskies were happy, energetic, and well-loved. After a quick lesson on mushing, we set off on a breath-taking safari through snow-draped forests with headtorches to guide us on our way. The combination of the dogs’ enthusiasm, the peaceful surroundings and the thrill of the ride made this one of our favourite activities.
After visiting Bearhill Husky in October, I would highly recommend booking with them while staying in Rovaniemi. They provide the option of self-driving a team of dogs or enjoying a guided experience with a trained driver. This is much better for the dogs health and I love the care they provide their team. Snowmobiling Adventure
One of the most exhilarating experiences in Lapland was taking a snowmobiling tour through the Arctic wilderness. You can easily join a guided excursion that takes you deep into untouched forests and over frozen lakes. The rush of zooming through snowy trails, combined with the incredible scenery, is unforgettable. Snowmobiling is an excellent way to see Lapland’s rugged beauty while enjoying a thrilling ride, and it’s suitable for beginners with proper instruction.
Northern Lights Tour
No trip to Lapland is complete without chasing the Northern Lights. We joined a guided tour with Wild About Lapland (get a discount code here) to maximise our chances of seeing this natural wonder. The guides took us away from the city lights to a number of viewing locations. We were lucky enough to see the Aurora Borealis dancing in shades of green which was a truly magical moment we’ll never forget.
I would recommend you get an Aurora app on your phone so that you can be alerted to any viewings outside your tour time. We were lucky enough to spot the aurora riverside in Rovaniemi without a tour.
Arktikum
For a day of local culture and science, visit Arktikum, a world-class museum and science centre. Learn about the history and culture of Lapland, as well as the challenges of Arctic living. The interactive exhibits and stunning architecture makes it an engaging and insightful way to learn about the region.
