Hotelli Aakenus Rovaniemi review – the best budget hotel in the city centre

If you’re searching for budget accommodation in Rovaniemi that puts you exactly where you need to be – without the resort price tag – Hotelli Aakenus deserves a close look. I’ve stayed here twice, once in September and once in January and it’s my go-to recommendation for anyone travelling solo or as a couple who wants to spend their money on Lapland experiences rather than the hotel room.

Location – one of the best things about this hotel

Hotelli Aakenus sits within easy walking distance of the Rovaniemi city centre – a relaxed 5-10 minute stroll to the shopping centre end of town, which puts you close to restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and Arctic safari booking companies. For a budget hotel in Rovaniemi, this central positioning is a genuine win.

Public transport links are also convenient from this location, which matters when you’re moving between activities and don’t want to rely on taxis for every journey. For long-haul travellers arriving into Rovaniemi and needing a practical, well-positioned base, the location is hard to fault.

Rooms and amenities – functional and clean

I’m going to be straightforward – this is a basic hotel. The rooms are clean, functional and come with the essentials – private en-suite bathrooms (small, but private), a bed, TV and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are compact, so if you’re expecting spa-like space, adjust expectations accordingly. But for a couple of nights in Finnish Lapland when you’re spending most of your time outdoors on Northern Lights hunts, husky safaris, or reindeer experiences, it’s everything you actually need.

Luggage storage is available at the hotel – a practical detail that makes a real difference on arrival and departure days when you want to explore before check-in or after check-out. For solo travellers and couples passing through Rovaniemi, this kind of flexibility is genuinely useful.

Breakfast – season makes a significant difference

This is where I’ll be honest with you, because it’s worth knowing before you book. The winter breakfast in January was excellent – a proper buffet spread that set me up well for a full day of Arctic activities in freezing temperatures. Warm, varied, fresh and exactly what you need before heading out into the Finnish Lapland cold.

The autumn breakfast in September, however, was a noticeable step down. More limited, less impressive and if you’re visiting in early autumn, it’s a fair point of comparison. The breakfast is included in the rate, so it’s not a dealbreaker – but it’s worth knowing that the winter offering is the stronger of the two.
