The Most Unique Encounter with Brown Bears at Karhu Kuusamo
September in Finnish Lapland brings a magical transition where summer fades into the crisp embrace of autumn. Among the dense forests and silent lakes, I found myself at Karhu Kuusamo, embarking on an unforgettable experience that was both relaxing and thrilling. The prospect of seeing wild brown bears in their natural habitat was enough to send my excitement through the roof, yet the experience turned out to be so much more than I had imagined. I had the most unique encounter with brown bears at Karhu Kuusamo and would recommend it to anyone who is even slightly interested.

The wait in anticipation
The adventure began in a small, cosy hut strategically placed nearby to the forest and waters edge. This was our observation point, a front-row seat to the spectacle. As the guide led us in, we were reminded of one crucial rule: patience and silence were our greatest allies. Brown bears are creatures of incredible sensitivity, particularly when it comes to their sense of smell. They can detect scents from as far as 30km away. Their sharp noses are part of what makes them such adept survivors in the wild!
However, their keen senses mean they are also easily deterred by human presence. A single loud noise could ruin our chances of seeing these majestic animals. So, we waited. The atmosphere inside the hut was serene, the quiet hum of nature punctuated only by the occasional movement of my group inside the hut or movement outside by a bird or rustle of leaves in the wind. Outside, the guide had scattered salmon – a favourite treat for the bears – in hopes of luring them into view. That in itself was fun to watch!!
A lesson in patience
As the minutes turned to hours, I found myself settling into the rhythm of the forest. The waiting, instead of feeling tedious, became meditative. The sun began its descent, casting golden hues across the landscape. The world outside the hut seemed to glow, and for a moment, it didn’t matter whether the bears appeared or not. Just being there, immersed in nature, felt like a gift.
A movement in the distance caught my eye. A bear and cub emerged, their powerful frames moving with surprising grace. It sniffed the air cautiously, clearly aware of every scent and sound. Slowly, it approached the hidden and scattered salmon, its cautious steps a reminder of how acutely it could sense its surroundings. Watching this magnificent creature was like witnessing a secret part of the world unfold before me. It was truly incredible and beautiful. It was an experience I will never forget.

The magic of nature
Over the next hour, we watched the bears come and go from the forest, each one a testament to the raw beauty and resilience of Lapland’s wilderness. Their presence was a humbling reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme of things. I was struck by the quiet intelligence in their movements, their every action deliberate and purposeful.
As darkness began to blanket the forest, the bears retreated, disappearing as silently as they had come. The experience left me in awe, not just of the bears but of the natural world as a whole. The quiet moments of waiting had been just as rewarding as the moments of action. It was such a special experience and I am so grateful to have been gifted such an opportunity.

A stay at the House of Northern Senses
This incredible experience was made even more special by staying at the House of Northern Senses in Ruka. Located just outside Ruka and only 30 minute drive from the meeting point of Karhu Kuusamo, the manor style accommodation provided the perfect base for such an adventure. After a day of exploring and bear-watching, returning to the House of Northern Senses for a Finnish woodfire sauna and lake swim, felt like coming home to a haven of peace and comfort.
Tips for your visit Karhu Kuusamo
If you’re planning a visit to Karhu Kuusamo, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Dress warmly: September evenings can be chilly, so layer up to stay comfortable.
- Bring binoculars: While the bears may come close, having binoculars enhances the experience.
- Stay silent and wear dark colours: Remember, the bears’ senses are incredibly sharp. Keeping quiet and being discrete is essential.
- Be patient: Nature doesn’t operate on a schedule. The waiting is part of the adventure.
Karhu Kuusamo offers more than just a chance to see wild bears; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature on a deeper level.
