Things to do in Kemijärvi Year-Round

One of my highlights of Kemijärvi was being able to explore on foot. I visited in Autumn and on my own, so the weather was perfect for a wander and to be able to take it all in at my own pace. Additionally if you have a car, you can go further afield to explore nearby highlights being the junction of the shortest and longest river, as well as the lookout tower which provides three hundred and sixty degree views of the area.

Kemijärvi in every season:

• Winter: Embrace snowy adventures with cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and husky safaris. The frozen lake becomes a playground for ice fishing and Northern Lights hunting.
• Spring: As the snow melts, nature comes to life. You can enjoy peaceful hiking trails and the first glimpses of wildlife.
• Summer: Soak up the Midnight Sun with lake swimming, fishing and kayaking. Explore the lush forests or take a relaxing boat ride.
• Autumn: Experience Ruska, the Finnish autumn, as the landscapes transform into vibrant hues of red, orange and gold. Perfect for hiking and berry-picking.

Winter at Jauri Resort – the most authentic Lapland activities in winter I have experienced

I need to spend some time on this, because it is the most important thing I can tell you about Jauri Resort.

When I hosted my group trip at Jauri Resort in winter, we had a full activity programme – snowmobile safari, husky sledding, reindeer experience, sauna and ice swim and a Northern Sky tour. All of these activities are available at multiple Lapland resorts. What made the Jauri Resort versions different – genuinely, meaningfully different – was the way they are delivered.

Jauri Resort partners with small, family-run businesses in the Kemijärvi region for their activity programme. These are not large-scale, conveyor-belt operators running dozens of groups through the same choreographed routine. These are local families who have been doing this work in this landscape for generations, who know the forest, the animals and the sky with an intimacy that shows in every moment of every experience.

Snowmobile Safari

Driving a snowmobile through the forests around Kemijärvi with a guide who knows every trail was exhilarating in a way that larger-scale snowmobile operations often fail to deliver. The routes felt genuinely exploratory rather than scripted and the silence of the forest between engine stops – that particular, total silence of a Finnish winter – was extraordinary.

Husky Sledding

The husky experience with Jauri Resort was authentic and intimate. The small scale means you spend real time with the dogs, the musher knows each animal individually and the sense of connection to the landscape is entirely undiminished by crowds or noise. My group were moved by it, as was I.

Reindeer Experience

Delivered through a local reindeer herder family rather than a resort staging ground, the reindeer experience at Jauri Resort felt genuinely connected to the Sámi and Finnish reindeer herding culture of the region. This matters. The difference between a performative tourist experience and something rooted in real cultural practice is palpable – and it’s the difference Jauri’s local partnerships deliver.

Sauna and Ice Swim

The lakeside sauna and ice swim experience in winter at Kemijärvi is exceptional. The combination of the heat, the cold of the frozen lake, the silence of the winter night and the possibility of the Northern Lights above you creates a sensory experience that is quintessentially Finnish and completely unforgettable. My group – some of whom were deeply sceptical about ice swimming before they arrived – emerged from the lake laughing and buzzing and stoked for having had this typical Finnish experience.

Northern Sky Tour

The Northern Sky tour was a particular highlight. Rather than a generic Northern Lights hunt by snowmobile, the Jauri experience incorporated genuine astronomy and sky knowledge, delivered by someone who has been watching the Finnish winter sky for years. Away from light pollution, in the frozen stillness of the Kemijärvi forest, this was stargazing and aurora watching at its most immersive.

While Rovaniemi and Levi might grab the spotlight, Kemijärvi offers a quieter, more personal slice of Finnish Lapland. Its proximity to major attractions like Pyhä-Luosto National Park and Posio and it’s magical Riisitunturi National Park makes it a great starting point for adventure. Yet, the peaceful ambiance and homey accommodations at Jauri Resort provide a relaxing counterbalance to outdoor activities.

Kemijärvi’s central location makes it easily accessible to have a great number of Lappish experiences and to explore the region.
