How We Explained Meeting Two Santas in Lapland

One of the most magical things about visiting Finnish Lapland with children is, of course, meeting Santa Claus. But if you’re planning multiple Santa experiences – like we did- you might find yourself faced with one very big question:

“But… how can there be two Santas?”

Before our trip, we knew we would be meeting Santa twice: once at Santa Claus Village (SCV) in Rovaniemi on December 23rd and again on Christmas Eve at Joulukka, Santa’s Secret Forest. Both were completely different and utterly magical experiences, but we knew we had to get ahead of the questions and weave a little story magic of our own.

We visited SCV on the 23rd, specifically to attend the Santa Send-Off Ceremony – the moment when Santa departs Lapland to begin delivering gifts around the world. It was pure joy. Earlier that day, we visited Santa in his official office. The experience was festive, polished and full of wonder. There were twinkling lights, elves chatting in the queue, peek-holes and surprises while we waited. When we finally stepped into Santa’s office, it was definitely one of those “wow” moments.

After our visit, the boys asked, “Are we seeing him again tomorrow?” And so began our little bit of Christmas storytelling…

We gently explained that the Santa we met at Santa Claus Village was one of Santa’s trusted helpers – a very important role, because he helps greet the thousands of children who visit Lapland each year. Not every child gets to meet the real Santa.

That’s when we revealed their surprise for the next day: a visit to Santa’s Secret Cabin, hidden deep in the forest at Joulukka. We explained that only a small number of very lucky children get to meet the real Santa in his private forest home. It’s a very special secret – and not one to be shared with others.

“If other children think they’ve met the real Santa,” we said, “that’s part of their magic. But now that you know the truth, it’s your job to protect the secret. If too many people find out about his cabin, Santa might not be able to keep it hidden anymore.”

They took this responsibility very seriously. The idea that they’d been let in on a magical, grown-up secret was almost as special as meeting Santa himself. It also added a layer of awe to our Joulukka experience. As soon as they saw him in the forest cabin, there was no doubt in their eyes – this was the real Santa.

Letting the magic be real

Meeting two Santas didn’t take away from the magic – it made it more magical. We watched our boys experience wonder in two very different ways: once through the joyful buzz of the Santa Claus Village and again through the quiet, intimate wonder of Santa’s hidden forest home.
