Spending a night in a Lapland igloo was very high on our list of things to do in Lapland! Since taking our first trip there in 2022 and spending a night in an Arctic Fox Igloo in Ranua, I have also had the privilege of staying in two other Lapland igloos giving me insight into the layout of three very different igloos.

I found it really interesting to see inside the different styles and look at them from the perspective of future travellers. They have all had features that I have loved and they also all vary in cost.

Glass igloos come in a range of prices, so decide how much you’re willing to spend. Consider whether the cost includes extras like meals, activities, or access to saunas and other amenities.

Privacy and Surroundings

If solitude and connection with nature are priorities, look for igloos with space between them. Some are more secluded, while others are clustered together for a social atmosphere.

• Sauna – A private sauna is a quintessential Lapland luxury. You will find them in many accommodations in Lapland, but not all. They obviously take up additional space so are not found in all Lapland igloos.
• Cooking facilities – If you prefer self-catering, look for igloos with a kitchenette.
• Meals – Some accommodations include breakfast or full-board options, while others have onsite restaurants.

Light Pollution and Facilities

• Light pollution – For the best northern lights viewing, choose an igloo far from city lights.
• Nearby facilities – Consider whether you want access to restaurants, ski resorts, or activities like husky sledding.

Included Activities

Many igloos offer activities like snowshoeing, ice fishing, or northern lights tours as part of the package. If you’re eager to explore, look for accommodations that include these experiences.

Choosing a location in Lapland for your bucket list experience of staying in an igloo may impact a number of the above factors. It is good to do your research of possible Lapland destinations and find a suitable igloo early in your planning if this is an important experience for you.
