Stepping onto a plane for your first overseas adventure is a mix of butterflies, excitement and maybe a little “what on earth do I pack?!” If you’re a woman setting out on your first trip abroad, you’re not alone in asking these questions. Every seasoned traveller once had that same moment, standing over an open suitcase, wondering how to fit their whole life inside a 23kg baggage allowance.

The good news? You don’t need everything. You just need the right things. With a little planning, some smart packing mixed with a dash of confidence, your first overseas trip can be smooth, safe and full of unforgettable experiences. Here are my top 10 travel tips for women who are about to take that exciting leap into the world.

Pack light, pack smart

Less is always more when it comes to travel. Choose clothing that can be mixed, matched and layered – think neutral colours with one or two statement pieces. Remember, you’ll be walking through airports, train stations and cobblestoned streets. Lugging around a heavy suitcase isn’t fun, so challenge yourself to keep things minimal.

Packing essentials for women travellers

There are a few items that always deserve a spot in your bag, no matter where you’re heading:

  • A lightweight scarf or shawl – doubles as a blanket on the plane, a cover-up in conservative areas, a picnic blanket or a pop of colour for your outfit.
  • Comfortable walking shoes – trust me, your feet will thank you – Merrell’s are my favourite because they are sturdy, comfortable and stylish and go with lots of outfits!
  • A small crossbody bag or daypack – perfect for keeping essentials close while exploring (check out these RFID bags for additional safetyZoomlite are my go to brand for a bit of style and functionality)
  • Period products you trust – not every country has the same options, so pack what works for you.
  • A reusable water bottle – stay hydrated and eco-friendly.
  • Power bank – because your phone will be your lifeline for maps, translations and capturing memories.

Think of these as your “non-negotiables” – they’re practical, versatile and designed to make your trip stress-free.

Embrace the carry-on challenge

Even if you’re checking a bigger bag, pack a carry-on with enough essentials to get you through 24-48 hours in case your luggage takes the scenic route. Include a change of clothes, your toiletries, medication and valuables. It’s peace of mind that every traveller appreciates. Having travelled with a friend recently whose bag didn’t arrive for FIVE whole days, I will always be travelling with enough to get me by for a couple of days in the future. Fortunately her travel insurance covered her for delayed arrival of luggage and she was able to buy a few bits and pieces to keep her going.

Keep copies of documents

Print and digital. Passport, visa, insurance, flight details. Keep a copy in your bag, one in your email and maybe share with a trusted friend at home. It sounds boring, but if something goes missing, you’ll thank yourself.

Dress for comfort, not just for the photos

Yes, you’ll want some nice photos, but don’t sacrifice comfort and warmth. Long flights, overnight buses, or day-long walking tours are far more enjoyable when you’re wearing breathable fabrics and shoes that don’t hurt. Bonus tip for flights: leggings + oversized shirt = travel uniform perfection.

Learn a few local phrases

“Hello,” “thank you,” and “where is the bathroom?” can open doors (and smiles!) wherever you are. People love it when you make an effort, even if your pronunciation is less than perfect.

Personal safety first

Trust your gut – it’s usually right. Keep your valuables close, don’t flaunt expensive jewellery (you could even leave it at home) and avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas. Download location-sharing apps so friends or family can check in on you if needed.

Don’t over plan

It’s tempting to cram your itinerary, but leave space for slow mornings, spontaneous detours and unexpected connections. Sometimes the best travel memories are the ones you didn’t plan for.

Create a comfort kit

Flights can be long and travel days unpredictable. A little pouch with lip balm, face wipes, a pen and notepad, snacks and headphones can make a huge difference. Add a good book or downloaded playlist and you’re set.

Say “yes” to new experiences

Your first overseas trip is about more than ticking off sights – it’s about saying yes to moments that push you outside your comfort zone. Join that local cooking class, try food you’ve never heard of, or strike up a conversation with another traveller. You never know where it might lead!
