The Power of Shared Experiences

The Power of Shared Experiences

19 August 2025 Off By Erin Parker

Travel has a way of transforming us, but there’s something uniquely special about experiencing it alongside others. Whether it’s standing on a mountain ridge in Nepal, laughing over late-night stories in Sedona, or sharing a glass of wine after a day exploring Port Fairy, the power of shared experiences I’ve experienced, can’t be overstated.

When we travel together, we create stories that live on long after the trip ends. These moments become memories that shape friendships, deepen connections and remind us that joy is often amplified when shared.

Why Women’s Group Travel Feels Different

I’ve had the privilege of leading and joining women’s group trips across the world – from the rugged coastlines of Lorne and Geelong to the high Andes of Peru. Each trip has been different, but one thing always stands out: the sense of community.

Women often arrive as strangers or acquaintances, carrying busy lives and long to-do lists. Yet, through the rhythm of travel – cooking meals together, supporting each other on a steep hike, or sitting quietly under a star-filled sky barriers fall away. Authentic connection happens.

There’s something powerful about a group of women travelling together: it feels supportive, safe and empowering. We encourage each other to try new things, step outside comfort zones and share not only the adventure but also the vulnerability that travel often brings.

Shared Experiences Create Lasting Bonds

The destinations have been diverse – Europe, Asia, Sedona, Port Fairy, Lorne, Geelong and beyond – but the lesson is always the same. Shared experiences create lasting bonds.

  • In Nepal, we pushed through altitude challenges together, cheering each other on step by step – we cried, laughed, achieved and our connection grew deeper.
  • In Peru, we huddled trekked through the Andes, exhausted and literally out of breath but exhilarated by the views.
  • In Sedona, we soaked in the spiritual energy of the red rocks, reflecting on life with honesty that only travel companions can inspire. I have some amazing like-minded friends that I made on this trip, none of whom I knew before I went.
  • muMEcations in Port Fairy, Geelong and Lorne, it was about celebrating the everyday joys: beach walks, great food and time carved out just for us.

Even my extensive travels through Europe with girlfriends in my 20’s have reinforced the same truth: laughter is louder, adventures bolder and challenges easier to overcome when shared.

Why Shared Experiences Matter

Research shows that shared experiences enhance happiness and strengthen social bonds. But beyond science, I’ve lived it. The power of shared travel lies in how it transforms not just our view of the world, but our view of ourselves.

Recent psychological analysis explains that shared experiences deepen connections through fostering empathy, mutual understanding, and emotional resonance – key elements for building strong relationships.

Shared experiences:

  • Build resilience – facing challenges with others makes you stronger – I have so many travel moments that I now reflect on and think, “Oh my goodness, I can’t believe that happened”. Things that I would say I would never do, but faced with real challenges and having to troubleshoot them with friends was scary and confronting, but we survived to tell the tales and these experiences certainly built resilience!
  • Create deeper friendships – memories become a bond that lasts long after the trip ends – some of my closest friends are those who I have travelled with. Some I knew before I travelled and some I met through travel and remained such close friends
  • Encourage growth – being supported by others helps you step beyond comfort zones – there are things I have done while travelling and places that I may have otherwise not gone to if it wasn’t for others.
  • Bring genuine joy – laughter and connection turn small moments into extraordinary ones – you know, the kind that bring you close to wetting yourself from laughing so hard!

Finding Your Own Shared Adventure

You don’t have to travel across the globe to feel the impact of shared experiences. It can be a weekend trip close to home, a hiking retreat, or even a cultural city escape. What matters most is the connection.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from leading and joining women’s trips, it’s this: the destination is just the backdrop – the people are the story.

While I also love to travel solo, my journey has shown me that the power of shared experiences is one of the greatest gifts travel can offer. Travel might fill your passport with stamps, but it’s the laughter, tears and triumphs shared along the way that truly fill my heart.

So, grab your girlfriends, join a women’s group trip, or simply say yes to adventure. Because together really is better.
