Solo travel in Lima: why I felt safe staying in Miraflores
When I told people I was travelling to Lima on my own, the reactions were mixed. Some friends warned me about safety, others suggested I skip it altogether and head straight to Cusco. And honestly? I was nervous. Lima is a huge, bustling city with a reputation that can feel intimidating for solo female travellers.
But my reality was very different. By choosing to base myself in Miraflores, one of Lima’s safest and most vibrant neighbourhoods, I felt completely comfortable exploring the city alone. Here’s my experience and why I’d recommend it to any woman considering solo travel in Lima.

Why stay in Miraflores as a solo traveller
Miraflores is often described as the “tourist hub” of Lima – and for good reason. It’s clean, well-lit and full of cafés, restaurants, shops and hotels. As a solo traveller, this made such a difference. I could walk to most places I wanted to visit, stroll along the clifftop Malecón during the day and even head out in the evenings without feeling unsafe.
Everywhere I went, I saw other solo travellers, couples and families enjoying the same spaces. That sense of community instantly put me at ease. It didn’t feel isolating; instead, it felt empowering to be part of a neighbourhood where people were out living their lives alongside travellers like me.
My experience of feeling safe in Lima
In my time in Lima, I walked around Miraflores daily – through Kennedy Park (yes, the one with the cats!), down bustling streets lined with restaurants and along the Malecón overlooking the Pacific. At no point did I feel threatened or uneasy.
Of course, I stayed aware and used common sense: I kept my phone and valuables tucked away, avoided poorly lit side streets at night and used Uber instead of hailing taxis on the street. But these were the same precautions I’d take in any big city around the world.
For me, the biggest surprise was how relaxed I felt. Lima had been built up in my mind as somewhere to “get through” rather than enjoy, but once I settled into Miraflores, I realised it could be both safe and enjoyable for solo travellers.

Safety tips for solo female travellers in Lima
If you’re considering a trip to Lima on your own, here are the tips that worked for me:
- Stay in Miraflores or Barranco – both are safe, vibrant, and filled with travellers.
- Walk the Malecón during the day – stunning ocean views, and always plenty of people around.
- Use Uber or registered taxis – reliable, safe, and affordable.
- Avoid flashy jewellery or obvious valuables – it’s best to blend in.
- Trust your instincts – if somewhere feels off, don’t push it.
These aren’t rules to limit your adventure; they’re habits that help you explore with confidence.
Empowerment through solo travel
As a mum, I’ve spent years caring for others – so this trip to Lima was also about caring for myself. Walking through Miraflores, eating ceviche on my own, watching sunsets over the Pacific… each experience reminded me that I was capable, strong and safe in my own company.
Travel doesn’t have to mean reckless risk-taking. It can mean finding spaces where you feel empowered, respected and at ease – and for me, Lima’s Miraflores was exactly that.

So, is Lima safe for solo female travellers?
Yes. While you’ll always hear mixed opinions, my personal experience was that Lima can be safe, enjoyable and empowering for women travelling alone, especially if you stay in Miraflores or Barranco.
If you’re planning a trip to Peru and wondering whether to include Lima on your solo adventure, I’d encourage you not to skip it. This city surprised me with its charm, its food, its sunsets – and above all, with how comfortable I felt exploring it alone.
