Rovaniemi Airbnb review – budget family accommodation

Finding affordable family accommodation in Rovaniemi over Christmas is genuinely challenging. The city fills fast, prices spike and the options that sit within walking distance of the city centre are heavily in demand. When we found a centrally located Airbnb that could fit our family of four on a realistic budget, we booked without hesitation – and it delivered exactly what we needed.

We stayed in December, over Christmas and I’d recommend this style of accommodation to any family trying to make a Finnish Lapland Christmas trip work without spending the entire budget on a hotel.

The location was everything

I cannot overstate how valuable this location was for our family. A few minutes on foot to the centre of Rovaniemi. One minute to the famous sled hill where the kids launched themselves down the snow. Five minutes to the river’s edge – which is where we saw the Northern Lights for the very first time as a family.

That moment is something we’ll never forget and it happened because we were close enough to walk there spontaneously when the aurora appeared one evening. We grabbed our coats and were standing at the riverbank within minutes. For families chasing the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, proximity to the riverfront is genuinely underrated – and being able to get there on foot in two minutes is a real asset.

The sled hill being a one-minute walk was a gift with children. Back and forth, as many times as they wanted, at no extra cost beyond the walk. That kind of impromptu joy is hard to put a price on.

The apartment – practical, comfortable and self-contained

The apartment had a full kitchen – an absolute game-changer for families travelling on a budget in Finnish Lapland. Being able to prepare breakfast, pack lunches and snacks for a cold day outdoors and manage evening meals in the apartment saved us a significant amount across the trip. Rovaniemi restaurant prices, especially at peak Christmas season, are not insignificant. Groceries on the other hand are comparable to what we were used to in Australia.

A washing machine was also available within the apartment, which feels like a small luxury until you’ve been packing winter gear for four people. The bathroom had heated floors, which felt like a genuinely thoughtful touch after cold days exploring Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village – it also helped dry clothes at the end of the day!

Sleeping arrangements – honest expectations

I’ll be transparent: our boys shared the twin room and my husband and I slept on the pull-out sofa in the lounge. For two adults, a pull-out sofa is not the most comfortable arrangement across multiple nights. But here’s the reality of family travel on a budget in one of the most expensive cities in Finnish Lapland at peak Christmas season – if it means a prime location, a full kitchen and making the trip financially possible, it’s absolutely worth it.

Go in knowing what the sleeping configuration is, book accordingly and you’ll be completely fine.
