Getting to Koh Larn from Pattaya

The ferry crossing couldn’t be easier – 40 baht each way, with multiple departures running throughout the day, so there’s no need to plan your whole day around a timetable. A few practical tips:

• Bring cash. Tickets are cash only, so have small notes ready before you get to the pier.
• Boats run on “Thai time,” which in practice means they sometimes leave early rather than late. Get there ahead of time – you don’t want to be the one waving at the ferry as it pulls away.
• If you’d rather skip the wait, there’s a speedboat option for 150 baht per person, each way – a quicker way across.

This kind of low-cost, low-hassle logistics is exactly why Koh Larn is such a good pick for a first solo island trip, a girls’ day out, or a family outing where you don’t want to overcomplicate things.

Tawaen Beach – The Main Hub

We spent our day at Tawaen Beach, the busiest and most popular spot on the island. It’s lively rather than serene – think crowds, energy and plenty going on – so if you’re picturing a quiet, secluded beach, this isn’t quite that. But if you want an easy, sociable, activity-filled day, it’s ideal.

You can visit for the day or stay overnight at Tawaen or elsewhere on the island if you want to extend the trip. For a day visit, we paid 50 baht per person for a beach chair with an umbrella included – a small cost for a shaded spot to base yourselves for the day. Just behind the beach chairs is a strip of restaurants, bars and shops, so food, drinks and anything else you need for the day are all close at hand.

Things to do on Koh Larn

Tawaen Beach is set up for a full day of activity, which makes it a great choice for families and groups alike:

• Banana boat rides – a firm favourite with kids (and honestly, plenty of adults too). Fair warning, you will likely get thrown off at some point, so go in expecting a splash rather than a smooth ride.
• Jet skiing – for those who want to head out under their own steam.
• Snorkelling – a nice way to see a bit more beneath the surface.
• Swimming – designated swimming areas are roped off from the boat traffic, which is worth sticking to given how busy the water gets.

Is Koh Larn worth visiting?

Koh Larn isn’t a relaxing, laid-back beach day – it’s busy, social and full of things to do from morning until evening. But that’s exactly what makes it such a great option for women travelling together, families with kids, or anyone wanting an easy taste of island life without the logistics of a longer trip. It’s affordable, simple to organise on the day and there’s enough on offer to fill your time without booking anything in advance.
