Gift ideas for mums, why experiences make the best presents
By Erin Parker – Women’s Adventure Host & Travel Writer (published September 2025, updated May 2026)
When it comes to gift ideas for mums, (speaking from experience!) I’ve learned that the best presents aren’t the ones you can wrap – they’re the experiences that create memories. Flowers wilt (they also make me sneeze!), chocolates get eaten (too quickly in my house) and perfume eventually runs out, but memories stay with us forever. That’s why, whenever I’m asked for recommendations on gifts for mums – whether it’s a birthday present, a Christmas gift, or a Mother’s Day surprise – I always suggest giving the gift of experience.

Why I believe experiences are the best gift for mums
Some of the most meaningful gifts I’ve ever received have been experiences. For my 30th birthday, I was given a scenic flight over the 12 Apostles from Apollo Bay. I can still picture the rugged cliffs and turquoise ocean from above – it was spectacular and so much more memorable than anything that could have come in a box.
Another time, I was treated to a stand-up paddleboard lesson at St Kilda Beach. I wobbled, laughed and fell in more times than I can count, but it was such fun and something completely different. Then there was the weekend away in Daylesford for Mother’s Day – a chance to rest, recharge and enjoy a slower pace. That gift of time was exactly what I needed.
But it’s not only the experiences I’ve been given that shaped this belief. In the past when my mum was unwell, we made a point of giving her experiences. One year, while visiting my sister in Perth, I decided to take her on a special trip to Monkey Mia, where she was able to enjoy the magic of the dolphins and the beauty of Western Australia. Another time, when she was unwell and couldn’t travel to Tuscany – her dream, bucket-list destination – we brought Tuscany to her at home. We transformed the dining room into an Italian restaurant, with music, decorations and a full Italian feast. She couldn’t make the trip, but the memory of that night is one we’ll all cherish forever.
These moments proved to me that the best gift for mums isn’t a “thing.” It’s the chance to feel special, to try something new and to create lasting memories.
Perfect occasions for gifting experiences
I believe experiences are the best choice for almost any occasion:
- Mother’s Day: Swap the traditional breakfast in bed for a gift that creates memories.
- Birthdays: Birthday presents for mums don’t have to be something wrapped in paper – they can be tickets, bookings, or even a contribution toward an adventure – I know some great adventures you could contribute to for her!
- Christmas: A Christmas present for mums doesn’t need to be rushed and last-minute. Give her something she can look forward to long after the decorations come down.
- Just because: Sometimes, the most powerful gifts are the unexpected ones. A surprise experience can be more meaningful than anything bought in a store.

Why I recommend group trips as gifts
Experiences have always been the most treasured gifts in my life, I wanted to create opportunities for others to have the same. That’s why I host group trips designed with mums in mind. These aren’t just holidays; they’re experiences that go deeper. They’re about:
- Step outside your comfort zone
- Reconnect with yourself
- Build confidence through adventure
- Share unforgettable moments with like-minded people
A contribution toward one of my group trips would be one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give! Imagine gifting a mum you love the chance to:
- A bucket-list trip to Finnish Lapland
- Exploring the colours of Peru
- Or recharging on a Women’s Adventure Weekender closer to home
These kinds of experiences aren’t just trips – they’re opportunities to grow, heal and create stories she’ll treasure forever.
The best gift for mums is time
Looking back, the gifts that stand out to me are the ones that gave me – and my mum – time. Time to explore, to laugh, to connect and to make memories. Those are the gifts that live on, long after birthdays or Christmases have passed.
So, if you’re searching for good presents for mums, whether it’s a birthday idea, a Christmas present, or just a way to say “thank you,” I can’t recommend the gift of experience enough. If you want something truly unforgettable, consider giving the gift of adventure through a contribution to one of my group trips.
At the end of the day, the best gift for mums isn’t something you buy – it’s the moments and memories you give them.
